Hydrology Summary Bulletin – August 2026
Hydrology bulletin on rainfall, river flows, lake levels, groundwater levels and spring outflows for August 2026.
August 2026 was warmer and drier than average across most of the country, with high pressure dominating for much of the month. The third week saw temperatures ease with rain and showers returning particularly in the north and west of the country. Conditions changed in the final week when low pressure brought milder air and widespread rain and showers and some thundery
outbreaks of rain that ended a prolonged dry spell in parts of the southeast.
The decrease in river flows observed in July continued into August. Compared to July, average river flows decreased at 82% of monitoring stations assessed, with 86% of the monthly average river flows below the long-term normal range. Lake and turlough levels also decreased at 93% monitored sites, with 82% below the long-term normal range. Groundwater levels decreased at all monitoring locations with 81% below the long-term normal range. Of the five spring flows monitored, 1 was classified as ‘normal’, 2 were ‘below normal’ and 2 were in the ‘particularly low’ range.
