Invite to National Economic and Social Council Sustainable Future Workshops

The National Economic and Social Council (NESC) is currently undertaking research on Ireland’s approach to climate action and sustainability and what is needed to put Ireland on track to a sustainable future. NESC is holding cross-stakeholder community workshops in Dublin (23rd June) and Athlone (7th July), each with the same agenda, to gather contributions from a diverse range of stakeholders and communities.

The NESC want to hear from you about your views on a sustainable future, what matters to you and what is important to make it happen.

A report of the workshop will be published on NESC’s website and outcomes of this workshop will inform NESC’s research and advice to government on Ireland’s sustainable future.

What do the NESC from YOU?

During the workshop, you will be asked what you think are the important features of a sustainable and fair future through the perspective of different people’s lived experiences.

In the morning, you will work in breakout groups to develop those shared perspectives, so in the afternoon we can work on the story of how Ireland achieves a transformation to a sustainable and fair future.

If you would like to attend either workshop please register at the relevant link as follows:

If you would like to share the invite with a friend or colleague who would also be interested, please go ahead.

However, spaces are limited and will be allocated to ensure that a diversity of people and organisations are represented, so please register as soon as you can.

Who is involved?

Quite simply, everyone in Ireland has a role to play. This can be from something as simple as making sure you don’t pollute your local stream, or a local community working together to establish a Rivers Trust to enhance the rivers and lakes in their area, to a Government Department or Agency helping a Minister implement a new policy to help protect and enhance all our water bodies.

This website has been developed and is maintained by the Environmental Protection Agency, and is a collaboration between the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Local Authority Waters Programme.

LAWCO

Local Authority Waters Programme

The Local Authority Waters Programme coordinates the efforts of local authorities and other public bodies in the implementation of the River Basin Management Plan, and supports local community and stakeholder involvement in managing our natural waters, for everyone’s benefit.

EPA

Environmental Protection Agency

The EPA is responsible for coordinating the monitoring, assessment and reporting on the status of our 4,842 water bodies, looking at trends and changes, determining which waterbodies are at risk and what could be causing this, and drafting environmental objectives for each.

DECLG

Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage

The Department is responsible for making sure that the right policies, regulations and resources are in place to implement the Water Framework Directive, and developing a River Basin Management Plan and Programme of Measures to protect and restore our waters.
